These tidal pools are a wonder to behold, and offer a unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else. In this blog post, we’ll tell you all about the tide pools in Kona and how to best experience them.

What are tide pools?

Tide pools are shallow areas of water that are found near the shoreline. They are usually formed when waves hit the rocks and create a small pool of water. Tide pools can be found all over the world, but they are especially popular in Hawaii because of the warm weather and beautiful scenery.

Tide pools go hand in hand with snorkeling. To find more spots to explore the amazing wildlife, check out the best snorkeling spots on the Kona Coast.

Are tide pools dangerous?

Tide pools are not dangerous if you take the proper precautions. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and always stay within arm’s reach of the shoreline. Never swim in a tide pool, as the currents can be strong and unpredictable.

The Best Tide Pools

With Hawaii’s vast beaches, it’s hard to go over all of the tide pools. Here are a few of our favorite tide pool locations on the Big Island.

Wawaloli Beach

This is a great family-friendly beach to explore tide pools. The sand surrounds the tide pools and is well protected from the open ocean. During high tide, it makes for good swimming and relaxation, and low tide becomes a time to explore and find interesting wildlife.

Keep your distance from the hard rocky shoreline when the waves or big or when the tides are high.

Directions

Wawaloli Beach is around 6-miles North of Kona, and just past the runway for the Kona Airport. Turn in on mile marker 94 near the Natural Energy Lab on Highway 19. Take the fully paved road until it turns right. The area is just past the parking area.

Puako Bay Beach

This is another amazing place to spot tidepools. The beach has 6 different access points, and while there isn’t a lot of sand its extensive tide pools and coral reefs are well worth it. The best time to visit these tidepools is during low tide, which will be the easiest time to explore all the interesting wildlife.

If you go snorkeling, remember to monitor ocean conditions and check the surf report. There are no lifeguards here.

Directions

Follow Highway 19 North from Kona. Take a left on Puako Rd. before mile marker 70. Public access points are on telephone poles 106, 110, 115, 120, 127, and 137 – these should all be well marked.

Old Kona Airport Beach Park

This recreation area is a great beach located on the outside of Kailua-Kona. The beach has small parts of sands and great tide pools scattered throughout the coastline. It is also generally a quieter place to get away from the crowds.

Directions

Follow Kuakini Highway north past the Kona Aquatic Center, and turn left immediately past Makala Boulevard. You can park in almost any spot, just look out for any signs saying “no parking”. There are restrooms and outdoor showers here.
