From stargazing to SUP lessons under the moonlight; you’re sure to find something fun for all ages. So turn off your lights and let yourself be immersed in nature’s show while enjoying one of these top-notch experiences!

SNORKELING WITH MANTA RAYS

The Kona Coast‘s night sky is one of the most beautiful in the world. The coastline is dotted with fabulous resorts where you can rest your head, and there are hundreds of different sea creatures just waiting for you to come visit. One of these magnificent creatures that makes the Big Island its home is the Manta Ray. These gentle giants usually begin their day at sunset where they feed on plankton, crustaceans, and other small organisms. They typically spend the day resting deep in the ocean so it’s during this time at night that you’ll have a chance to snorkel with manta rays.  Their nighttime feeding habits make them much easier to spot when it’s dark out, and because the plankton that they eat are attracted to lights, often times the manta rays will swim right up to any lights in the water. To top it all off, this activity is available year-round so you can enjoy these majestic rays during your very own Hawaiian adventure!

EXPERIENCE THE PICTURESQUE BIG ISLAND SUNSETS

As the sun sets, head to any beach on the West side of Hawai’i Island for a picturesque sunset. All beaches are public domain so everyone is able to enjoy mother nature’s beauty. After the sun has set, the sky is left with a spectacular purple and orange hue that makes for a perfect backdrop to your beachside picnic. Bring some food and drinks with you so you can enjoy an evening of fun watching one of our legendary Kona sunsets!

VISIT THE HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK AT NIGHT

The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to the Big Island’s most active volcano: Kīlauea. You can visit this amazing place during the day but if you come at night, you’ll get to see something that few people ever experience – lava flowing into the ocean. The volcanologists here monitor eruptions and lava flows 24/7 so you’ll get to see activity even after the sun sets. There are plenty of tours that you can join but if you’re short on time, just head over here on your own and follow the glow-in-the-dark path through one of Hawaii’s most scenic spots. For daily updates on the lava flow and the most current park information, visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park website.

DRIVE OVER TO MAUNA KEA FOR STARGAZING

Mauna Kea is one of the volcanoes that make up the Big Island. It’s actually one of the tallest mountains in all of Hawai’i. The summit is above 13,000 feet and the area is known for being incredibly dark with minimal light pollution. It’s one of the best places in the world for stargazing. If you’re not too fond of driving there yourself, consider joining a tour group or carpooling with someone; but if you can handle the drive, you’ll be rewarded with some spectacular views and photo opportunities!

VISIT KONA COMMONS SHOPPING CENTER

Kona Commons is one of the most popular shopping centers on the Big Island. It’s home to many different shops, boutiques, and restaurants with something for everyone. The shopping center periodically hosts artisan markets, live music, and food trucks that serve up some delicious local eats at affordable pricing.  There are several food trucks here that serve up some delicious local eats at affordable prices so you’re bound to find something that will satisfy your appetite. ATTEND A LUAU

A Luau is a traditional Hawaiian party filled with food, dancing, and entertainment. It’s usually held outdoors during the summer months and it’s a great way to immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture while enjoying delicious local dishes. There are several different kinds of luaus but one that you should definitely keep an eye out for is a Kona Sunset Luau.
